Our Mission:
WELCOME TO THE SYRIAC MUSIC INSTITUTE, a crossroads for musicians and ministers, for scholars and practitioners. The Syriac Music Institute seeks to promote the study and preservation of Syriac music, ranging from religious to folk, and to facilitate opportunities for Syriac clergy, musicians, and particularly those interested in the study of ancient-Modern Syriac music.
We aim to serve the academic community and the heirs of the Syriac music heritage, specifically the Antiochian, Assyrian, Chaldean, Maronite, Melkite, St. Thomas Christians, Syriac Catholic, and Syriac Orthodox religious communities, thus transcending denominational diversity.
We carry out innovative educational projects which globalize Syriac music, making it available through every medium, namely the Internet, making it simple for students and laymen alike to access the Institute’s resources from every university, classroom, library and home. The Institute was established by Gabriel Aydin in 2007. That same year, it formally registered with the state of Rhode Island as a nonprofit organization with a board of trustees governing its activities.
In 2008, the Syriac Music Institute took on its first major commercial endeavor by volunteering to do the audio music for a new project entitled “ܟܬܒܐ ܩܕܝܫܐ ܡܛܠ ܛܠܝ̈ܐ“ (The Children’s Bible) which includes approximately 75 stories from both the Old and New Testaments.
Through these innovative projects, the Institute earned the respect and support of Syriac musicians, clergy and the Syriac-speaking communities.
